Another great book by the same author is Northern Nurse which tells his wife's story as a nurse in the same area as True North ( Labrador, where they both met each other while working at the Grenfell Mission hospital), very readable book. Elliott Merrick has written others books too, but these two books are his best ones.

Here's another good read. Born On Snowshoes by Evelyn Berglund Shore. It's available at AbeBooks.com Book Description: The Riverside Press, Cambridge, 1954. Cloth. Book Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. blue cloth cover with light bumping to head and tail of spine. Inside cover have illustrated map of arctic circle area of Alaska near Fort Yukon. Inside of book has tight binding and very clean and unmarked. Book is illustrated. True story of three sisters who grew up in the remote Arctic wilderness. Ernie Pyle called them "the freshest in spirit of any women I had ever seen." Filled with excellent photographs. From the preface; When the author was 12 her father went into the hospital and never came out, leaving his wife and children to fend for themselves in the harsh Arctic. Evelyn Berglund Shore's mother joined forces with John Roberts, an old trapper and a friend of the family and, with only the three daughters to help them, they ran a trapline north of the Arctic Cricle 280 miles beyond Fort Yukon. By courage, endurance and endless work they made enough to support life. Nice years later when Ernie Pyle met them on his visit to Alaska, they had paid back any money borrowed and saved a little more. Ernie Pyle wrote, 'These girls grew up in the woods. They knew no life but that of a trapper. They had never seen a village with paved strees or brick buildings. They didn't know much about men. They had never drunk or smoked or danced or played cards. But they had to shoot only once at a running moose, and they could freeze their feet without crying

I really appreciate all the great book suggestions here. Have gotten 5 mentioned here and not a bad one yet. In addition to TLN one of my favoites since I was in High School (I'm 65 now) is the Jeff White series of 5 books written by Lew Dietz. Like TLN, I reread them every few years. Unfortunately, they tend to be a bit "pricey" as they are considered some of the most collectable books written on the nothern Maine wilderness. But I notice that prices are coming down lately, especially on ex-library copies. They are in order: Jeff White Young Woodsman, Jeff White Young Trapper, Jeff White Young Guide, Jeff White Young Lumberjack, and Jeff White Forest Fire Fighter. They are well written by a knowledable writer who was born in 1907.

I got a copy of, "Born on Snowshoes," by Evelyn Shore, and while it isn't nearly as good as TLN at least to me, it is an amazing account of life in Alaska from 1917 to 1958. Since it covers 41 years as compared to one year for TLN, a fair amount of not so good things happen to the family, and are recorded honestly. At one point the three sisters swore to each other that they would run away before they would spend another winter on the trap line! I suspect that it is a survival story of a life that many of us would turn away from if we could. It does, however, have many very good pictures of the people and events related in the book. If you can get it at a reasonable price, it's worth adding to your collection. Ralph

If you ever find a copy of "HANDLOGGERS" by W. H. Jackson, grab it. One of the truly great books written about living and working in the wilderness. I have had to work very hard at getting this book returned to me everytime I've lent it to someone. Even my buddies who don't like to read could not put it down. It has never had a bad review.

Just finished reading reading Handloggers and you are right, it's an excellent read. I had trouble putting it down also. I ordered the book through our local library but they had trouble finding it. I see abeBooks has a few copies. They are priced from $14.00 to $150.00.The book is about a couple who log in the summer and trap in the winter. They live on a boat year round and takes place on the southern tip of Alaska. It has it all including some hair raising grizzly stories. The couple lived the life that we all dream about. Russ
