I read this book as a junior high student in Ohio in 1964 and was also just beginning my own trapline in Ohio. All through high school I aspired to meet the Vanderbeck's and even pursue a career as a wilderness trapper. As reality would have it I followed a very different path in life. But I often wonder how things would have been different pursuing my boyhood dreams. I subscribed to Fur-Fish-and-Game (still do) and read the many stories about E.J. Dailey trapping the Adirondack region of New York about the same time as the Vanderbecks in the 1930s. My heart was always on being a wilderness trapper no matter where. I even had extensive lists of supplies and provisions all made out. Its gratifying to now see that the legacy of the Vanderbeck's lives on at this site. Now I am wanting to plan a retirement trip to Nakina and most of all, obtain a copy of the book and relive those stories all over again. Wonderful to see this site!

My situation is very similar, I read the book in grade school and it inspired me to become a trapper. In my late teens and twenties I was actually able to trap the vast wilderness areas of northeastern MN, now known as the BWCA. I had a partner for some of the time, and ran solo lines of up to two weeks, for beaver, fisher, marten, and fox.
Now that I am over 50 years of age, I look forward to retiring and doing some more wilderness trapping. I currently run traplines after work and on weekends.

I was in the 4th grade in PA when I first read this. Well, its been ....kinda part of me since. the creation if the internet really connected us like nothing else could have. How could we...whoever we were, where ever we were; know there were like people who really wanted more out of what the book gave us.
Thru Matt's connectivity to the net...we were able to get this vehicle online and then it took off with facts, stories and mysteries along the way. Having the members who have a direct connection to the people OR land (Hi JoAnn) the Vanderbeck's once occupied makes this an even more genuine site for the book.
this is great what it has become.
