Next Thursday I'm heading north from my home in Connecticut to Nakina for a 12 day solo canoe trip. Although I'm not going to be paddling in the area of the book, I will be using Northland Outfitters for before and after accommodations. I plan to put in at Marshall Lake and paddle a 100 mile circuit back to the Marshall Lake area, which is a little west of the TLN book. I'm 66 years old, I paddle a 15' Chestnut Chum wood canvas canoe that I restored myself, canvas packs, cook over a fire. I have done many solo trips in Ontario and Quebec but this trip will have a first for me. I bought a SPOT signal device and will report into my wife and kids every night while in the bush. Hopefully I will post OK every night. I prefer old school, but sometimes you have to adjust. I hope to learn more about the area of TLN from the folks at Northland Outftters and maybe next year do the Drowning River and look for old campsites from the boys. I'm pretty excited about this trip, I know how to pace myself and solve problems, so I'm looking forward to a nice time in the Canadian bush. Paddles Up!

I live in Northwest Connecticut and drove 20 hours to Marshall Lake which is about 45-50 miles northwest of Nakina, Ontario where I paddled my wood canvas Chestnut Chum 100 miles solo on the Marshall Lake circuit for 10days. It was a really nice trip, although many portages where grown over and I was forced to line/wade/run many rapids. Here is the first installment and I will add more as time permits. I didn't see anyone for the first 7 days, then on the 8th I saw a fisherman in a motor boat on the Kap River. I hope you folks enjoy my report. Putting in at Marshall Lake
My first campsite on Dog Island My Chestnut ready to leave Dog Island and fight the winds An old trappers cabin at the portage into the Gripp River. This port was in good shape with just a few blowdowns to climb over, Inside the cabin, sorry about it being blurry, I dropped my camera and couldn't see the previews the rest of the trip. The fishing was very good at the bottomof the rapids Fresh caught pickerel with instant patatoes over a "twig" stove with my cold handle frying pan. Second campsite on Gripp Lake, sleeping on moss is nice for this tired old timer Gripp Lake the next morning. I enjoyed a nice coyote breakfast next, that is, walk down to the lake, take a drink, wash my face and have a good look around. Next installment, a shorelunch at a First Nations campsite on Gripp Lake. Thanks for coming along. Beavertail.

The next morning at my campsite on Gripp Lake I enjoyed a nice pancake breakfast cooked over my little twig stove. You have to be careful with the twig stove, they cook fast and hot, so you need to pay atention, but the rewards are great, nice pancakes and coffee. I paddled the lake with just my small fishing outfit, frying pan, some oil and coffee. It wasn't long before I caught a nice pickerel for lunch. I spotted a nice rock outcrop and figured it would make a nice place for a quick lunch. I guess the First Nations folks also enjoy this spot, as out back there was a frame used to support their canvas tent during the hunting season I guess. They left plenty of wood for the fire, but I only needed a small amount so I found that back in the bush. Nothing like fresh caught pickerel and coffee, along with some instant potatoes. The view from my world class seat!

I went back up there again this past August. I did a 6 day trip starting at Marshall Lake again and headed down the Grip River thru Summit Lake and finished at the Ogoki Bridge with a group. Water levels where low otherwise we would have been out for a longer trip. So after the group went home, I went back to Marshall (about 40 miles N/W of Nakina) and stayed there 4 days solo. Here's a video of my 4 days on Marshall Lake. I met a first nations guy and his wife there Charlie and Alice he said his grandad had the trappers cabin at the outlet of Marshall Lk on the Grip River. It's still there, it was nice to talk to him, nice guy. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ba5A7u8iEQs

I went back to the area this past summer, Marshall Lake down the Grip River to the Kap River with a group of friends. Nice time, then I went back to Marshall Lake for 4 days solo, got wind bound but had fun none the less. Met a first nations guy named George and his wife Alice, they invited me for tea the next day but the wind prevented the paddle to his cabin (only 2 cabins on the lake). Sadly I had to leave the next morning. He told me of his grandfathers trapping tilt down the lake how him and his Grandfather used to have tea at the campfire I was using, nice experience meeting such a nice person in the bush Here's a video of my group trip www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWXK357KGDYHere's a video of my 4 days solo some good fishing at the end www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ba5A7u8iEQsI don't think Northlands is open, not sure.
