hello everyone, I first read tln in junior high back in the 70's. Saw an ad in fur-fish-game recently, and comment out loud how nice it would be to read it again. Well, to my delight,my oldest son gave me a copy for christmas. He said he bought it on e-bay. It's a school library copy stamped "cold springs" on the inside. Just finished reading it. Brought back a lot of fond memories. This book helped start my trapping fever some 33 years ago. I would like to hear from anyone with info on the vanderbecks, such as who has passed on and when,etc... Also if anyone has any maps of the boys trapline. hope to hear from someone soon. -Joe

Joe, welcome to the message board! Your story sounds a lot like mine. Are you still trapping? I started the same way as you, and took it back up a few years ago. Love those mink! There's a few other old trappers here too.
As for your questions, this is just the message board. Click the "Main" link above to go to the rest of the TLN web site. There's a lot of info there including family history after the book and maps showing old and new names for the lakes and rivers on their traplines. Hope that helps answer some of your questions. Matt

Hi Joe; My name is John Callan. I also read the ad In Fur-Fish-game and it got me excited again too. To read more about me and I disagreeociation with the Vanderbeck's and people who knew them, I want to invite you to go to www. Helium.com and look for me, or the true story that I wrote regarding living the dream; my wilderness paradise. The story will get you up to date a little bit.
I had the priviledge to meet Jim personally and he's autographed my copy of Traplines North a dream come true. Another interesting note is that the picture in the book where you see two arms with sticks holding the porcupine.. It was Emile Cote that was holding it!
In my visit with Jim at the time I asked him about his brother Lindsay and he said that Jim was killed in a helicopter accident while he was working for Ontario Hydro. So the paragraph in the History part of this website referring to a Lindsay Vanderbeck that is buried in Nipigon would be Jim's brother.
Traplinelines North was a book that changed my life. Recently I have been in touch with a Russel Kerr who is now registered to on this web page too. We have been working together recently to mark out the trapline. He's yet to get back to me with a map he's got started with Google Earth. I have the map, but it's in a file extension that I can't open with my graphic programs.
The copy of Traplines North that I have is copyrighted 1958. I ordered it in 1967 from a wholesale catalog company out of Kansas City Mo. The company has since gone out of business.
I'd love to hear back from you. I have much more to share. Also if you want to you can send me a regular email to me personally to Joncallan@hotmail.com
I've just recently become a member of this site too and am looking froward to the sharing process with everyone. John

It has been awhile since I visited the site and am glad to hear from new members. Our town of Nakina will be celebrating the 85th anniversary of its beginning August 1 thru 4th this summer. Hopefully we will get to visit personally with some of you avid TLN readers. Matt has expressed an interest in joining us during that time. Bob and I live on the Vanderbeck property and will welcome visitors. Jo Ann and Bob

It has taken part in developing who I am. Matt- Arent the Bourgainas (?) running pretty much the same trapline now?
