Since this topic was started under the other header (handwritten jacket information...) I figured it should be under its own distinction as it has the potential to create a long threaf in itself. ok We know Joe Leake as the reluctant Waba Lake neighbor to the Vanderbecks in the early 30's. Was there a closer connection not illustrated in the book. It was never brought out that he was nothing more (not that its nothing) than an honorable native who apparently had a consious of what was right and wrong and decidedly cared for his family. This is illustrated in the castor oil episode with his child and the susequent return of a pencil nub to Jim along with the moccassins as thanks for the remedy for the child. We dont see him with the Vanderbecks in everyday labors. We do get the feeling he is a moose killing lazy trapper in the remarks made of the scraps around his camp and the red fox jim finds thats been left there awhile. Who was Tom Spence? If he was Joe Leake, how did the name J.L. get in the book. Why the name change. Probably off base on this: Was the name change because he went to work for Emile and Emile didnt want the whole Joe Leake/ Werewolve thing going on. Was it because one or the other name is associated with a criminal offense. Or does the inscription in that TLN copy in the other thread get it all wrong. J.L and Tom being two different people. OK BATTER UP-

REPOSTING THE EBAY BOOK INSCRIPTION HERE FOR INCLUSION:
On EBay for a 1945 edition of Trap-Lines North. The description for that book says there are handwritten notes on the cover page made by the book's original owner, who had been a client of the Vanderbeck family starting in 1944. The text from that EBay ad is below.
"Up for auction we have a wonderful true outdoor adventure book. The title page reads as follows-
TRAP - LINES NORTH, A True Story of the Canadian Woods by STEPHEN W. MEADER illustrated. Published by DODD, MEAD AND COMPANY NEW YORK 1945
I bought this book from the estate of L. F. Baldwin of Eaton Rapids, Mi.. Lynn Baldwin was an avid outdoorsman who actually hunted, fished, and was guided by the main characters in this book. He made the following notes on the cover page.
'Joe leak is actually Tom Spence. Mr. Vanderbeck was dead in 1944.& Mrs. Vanderbeck married Emile Cote. All other characters in this book are real and I met most of them personally in Sept. 1944. Joe Leak alias Tom Spence was our guide (1945) and Emile Cote and wife (Mrs. Vanderbeck) were our outfitter. We hunted in 1944 & 1945 over the same territory and stayed part of the time in the same cabins. Mrs Vanderbeck (Cote) died in 1950. 1944- Mr. & Mrs. Emile Cots our outfitter & Chas. Mc Grady & Fred Russel our guide on Waba River trip. Mr. & Mrs. Cote our outfitters. Joe Leak - alias Tom Spence and Elizah Baxter our guides down the Downing River to Relief Lake in 1945. Lynn Baldwin'

....
Matt, remember I thought I had seen the name Tom spence somewhere ...thinking maybe it was in Edwin Mills book "Paddle,Pack and Speckled Trout".
Well, I went over it tonight and theres no Tom Spence in there. There is Jim and Emile and references to other guides including the Baxter's, Rich's and Bruce Nicolson. No Tom Spence.
In the book, TLN, Joe Leake (Tom Spence?) first comes into the story on a reference that implies " he's back again". I wonder if this guy was a transient. If the Vanderbecks moved between Nakina and Waba; did Joe (Tom) do the same ? If he did, where did he come from. If the Tom Spence thing is true, I guess Emile got pretty comfortable with him to be able to work with him.
