How did Maude fare with the boys when they returned form the service?
Theres alot of speculation that Jim and Lindsay didnt much like the idea of emile moving in and taking what should of been theirs to continue.
Theres also the feeling that the boys were about through with the outback life and LONGED to get to the larger cities and become part of its culture.
I know there is proof that Jim did continue to guide after his service stint however it is unclear if he was independent of Emile.
The book portrays Emile and the boys as close as family, but was it really.

When I chatted with Helen a couple of years ago she mentioned a visit to Nakina and Mary Sue and Robert called Emile "Grandpa". I think the boys realized a decent living was going to be hard to make for all of them and their off spring [although at that time neither boy was married]. I have some notes from letters Emile received in his later years and I will check for the names of the people mentioned in Julian's book.
