Thanks to Chris Lenard for making the trip up to Waba. It is something I have thought about doing many times over the years. The pictures are great. Terry.

Thanks! A lot of credit has to go to Russ Kerr as he ventured North to Nakina in the summer of 2008. He laid the groundwork for my trip and was helpful in providing GPS coordinates, maps and advice. My desire was for Russ and I to take the trip together this year, it just happened that our schedules would not allow for the same week. Russ has provided more insight and photos to this website than anybody I know. My hat goes off to him! As I stated in my earlier post, I do believe the Vanderbeck's spirits are still at the winter cabin site. My visit was magical and the fulfillment of a life long dream.

Actually guys the real credit should go to the people who pioneered this web site. Jo Ann Rotz, Matt Robison and Brian Schweikert. It was like a dream come true for me when I came across the web site. I would like to say thanks to them and everyone else who has contributed to the web site as well as all the people who just check it out because if no one was checking it out there wouldn’t be a point of having a web site. We have learned so much about the Vanderbecks and there is so much more to learn. Russ

I'm glad to have discovered this resource. In the summer of 1953, when I was 15, I was part of a eight person (six campers, a guide and a counselor), seven week, 1000 mile canoe trip in the Nakina-Drowning River area. I have fond memories of the couple of days we spent in Nakina, re-stocking provisions. Also I have sad memories of our experience of coming across what was described as Emile Cote's cabin, in a very remote area, and what I recall as the almost criminal behavior of our otherwise wonderful French Canadian guide. First he helped himself to flour, sugar and other supplies, presumably which Emile had carried to the cabin and would expect to depend on later in the season, and then, for no good reason, decided he had to trash the place. To us kids, what seened like a violation of the law of the woods was sickening to observe. Although we ate well for the next few days, the experience was disturbing. I vaguely remember seeing some of Cote's writings there, although with a span of 57 years, the memory can play tricks. If anyone is interested, I have a few other vivid recollections and observations from that summer that I would be glad to share.

I am so glad this thing has taken off and for Matt to have made the idea of such a repository a reality by putting the site up. We should have some kind of ruck (pow wow ) sometime.
